Language Arts

Language Arts Requirements

Eight semesters of Language Arts classes are required for graduation.

Most students pursue the following sequence:

Freshman year:

English Nine (2 semesters) or
Interdisciplinary 9 (2 semesters) or
Honors English Nine (2 semesters)


Sophomore year:

English Ten (2 semesters) or
English Ten Workshop (2 semesters) or
Endeavor (2 semesters) or
Outdoor Academy (2 semesters) or
Pre AP Literature (2 semesters)


Junior year:

Basic Integrated 11 (2 semesters; blocked with American Studies) or
American Expressions (2 semesters; English class only) or
AP Literature (2 semesters; English class only)

Note: If a student fails English 9, English 10, or one of the junior-level English options, he/she must either repeat the failed semester or must take part in an approved credit retrieval program.

English 10 Workshop

For students who need additional or remedial support in English in order to meet standard on WASL.

Emphasis on individual student needs. A one-period class focusing on the review and development of reading, writing, and communicating skills necessary to graduate.

English 10

For both college bound and non-college bound students.

Includes, but is not limited to, the reading of classic and contemporary novels, plays, poetry, short stories, and non-fiction.

Further develops reading and writing skills in these modes and genres: expository, poetry, persuasive, career, and narrative. A one-period class focusing on reading, writing, and communication skills.

Outdoor Academy English 10

For both college bound and non-college bound students.

For students who are not interested in taking Pre-AP Literature in their sophomore year.

For students who enjoy a coordinated approach to learning.

Teaches the English 10 skills, but uses different texts (e.g. A River Runs ThroughIt, Into Thin Air) and revolves around various outdoor recreation. A three-period class that is coordinated with science and health & fitness meeting together every other day, all day, as a class of 80 students and three

Endeavor English 10

For both college bound and non-college bound students.

For students not taking Pre-AP Literature or AP European History courses Sophomore year.

Focuses on developing the skills and habits for transition to post-secondary education.

Follows the English 10 curriculum and is coordinated with social studies and science A one year program with the same three teachers and 80 students. A three-period class with science and social studies meeting together every other day.

Pre-AP Literature

For students who plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college and to take AP or UW classes offered at THS.

For students who possess a high interest in reading and analyzing literature. A one-period class focusing on extensive required reading and analysis of the classics, contemporary literature, poetry and non-fiction.

Application required for Pre-AP Literature.
