Scholarships and Information

Last updated on 11/17/09

Many students need financial assistance to help pay for tuition and other educational expenses. Listed below are different types of aid available.

Grants are federal, state and institutional funds awarded on the basis of need which do not have to be repaid. Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Grants, Tuition Exemptions, State Need Grants, and University Grants to eligible students.

Loans must be repaid, generally beginning six to nine months after you leave school. For most loan programs, you pay no interest while in school; interest begins to accrue during the repayment period. In some cases, payments may be deferred if you go back to school or serve in the U.S. Armed Forces, Peace Corps or a comparable volunteer organization.

Work Study opportunities are provided through federal and state programs on the basis of need, enabling students to work part-time while going to school. Jobs may be located on or off campus. Pay rates vary, but no job pays less than the applicable minimum wage. Many offer career-related or community services experience and are a good alternative to student loans.

Scholarships are provided through the generosity of private donors. Most of them require that recipients demonstrate both financial need and academic achievement. Only a few are awarded based on academic merit alone.

Tuition Waivers are available only to undergraduate and graduate residents of Washington State. Some schools award these strategically to help meet their various enrollment goals.

  • The Race For Education (RFE), a national 501(c)(3) scholarship organization, enables young people of equine industry families as well as those who want to pursue an equine-related or agricultural career, both with significant financial need, to obtain a college degree by providing tuition support; financial literacy training to help students minimize their debt load; mentoring services to provide students with emotional support; and permanent jobs upon graduation.

Young people are the future of the equine industry. Their development will help create dedicated fans, employees and hopefully the horsemen and women of tomorrow.

Since its founding in 2002, The Race For Education has awarded college scholarships to students in 40 states from a broad variety of backgrounds with varied scholastic pursuits. As our students graduate, RFE assists them in finding jobs within the equine and agricultural industries.

Our scholarships are need-based, with our main focus on the average student (2.85 GPA) who might not have the opportunity for other financial aid. RFE strives to find individuals that have the ability and the desire to give back to the community.

A selection committee made up of industry professionals and independent of our Board of Directors evaluates the applications. Each student receives a score in four weighted categories: financial need (35%), personal conviction and leadership (25%), personal interview (20%), and essay and communication skills (20%). In most cases, once a student has been selected, RFE makes a commitment to fund (or help secure funding via matching donations or other scholarship programs) the majority of the student's undergraduate tuition costs.  The scholarship recipient must maintain a 2.85 GPA and provide the RFE Board of Directors with a letter of update and their current contact information each semester.

Our desire is to select young artists who will some day change the way people view art, through their profession and community contributions.
